In a regular shift you get to man the front desk and greet and direct visitors as they come in, and you get to roam the galleries to keep an eye on things and be available when visitors have questions. When things aren’t busy, you can read or work on homework. Cell phones and gum are not allowed. There’s a nice little break room where you can store snacks/meals. You dress nice and wear a blazer as part of the uniform. You also sometimes get to work evening or weekend events and those are a blast. You get to interact with a lot of different types of people and learn more about art. I think they do a really good job at NEHMA of using the unique skill set that you bring to the table as well. For example, I had previous experience working with kids at after school programs and so my supervisors let me work a lot of tours and educational activities with kids and I loved it. One of my coworkers knew how to do tech stuff, so he helped out a lot with setting up speakers and projectors for events. Another girl spoke Spanish and so she worked Spanish educational activities. You’ll have talents and abilities that will contribute to the team and they will want to give you opportunities to utilize that.
