During a typical day at Altru as a Nurse Co-op, I am always assigned with a nurse for the day and I look up all of his/her patients and make notes just as I would if I was the nurse. After this, I join the nurse in receiving bedside report on each of his/her patients. Typically in the critical care unit, by the end of my second semester working there I would take over the care and the charting of one patient with the nurse overseeing everything I did. I would pass medications, assess patients, do bedside cares, etc. I had the ability to observe multiple procedures such as CT scans, x-rays, angiograms, endoscopies, colonoscopies, bronchoscopies, central line placement, arterial line placement, etc. Each day on the unit was very unique depending on my nurse's assignment and what patients on the units had going on for the day. Typically whenever there was a learning opportunity on the unit, I was pulled aside to observe, ask questions, and learn which enhanced my experience as a nurse co-op at Altru.
