Former Research Associate and Lab Manager at University of California, San Diego
almost 2 years ago
I come into work, and the first thing that I do is take care of any loose ends from any ongoing experiments. Sometime there are time sensitive items from the previous day. Then I answer any emails that I haven't answered. I will then go into starting new experiments. If there is any wait time while experiments are going, I do lab manager things, which include: checking supply stocks, ordering supplies, organizing meetings, etc. If there is a presentation coming up, I will also work on that. I continue doing experiments, and again, whenever there are lulls in the benchwork, I also update and organize my lab notebook. At the end of the day, I make sure the lab is in reasonable shape (no horrible messes, equipment malfunctions, etc.), and then I head home. I usually work very standard hours (9-5), but some people with similar positions choose to work more flexible hours, or their PI prefers them to be more flexible.
