I spend most of my days reaching out to press outlets via email and phone. That includes everything from print, radio, TV, blogs, community organizations, etc. Depending on the client. Outside of that there is a lot of background work and prep to be done with every client project so that includes researching their market, finding potential press contacts, and coming up with a comprehensive plan to market the artist. The marketing comes into play by writing pitches and press releases using your background information and creativity to help sell the artist.
