EP is hourly, meaning that you log your hours and get paid by the hour. You're expected to be there for 40 hours each week - if you're working more than 40 hours you will get paid overtime, but if you have tons of overtime I think you get in trouble. I think the larger issue in terms of work/life balance is that Google provides a lot of resources outside of work which can be very absorbing. For example, I often stayed at work until 6 pm because there was dinner provided at that time, and I didn't want to cook. I'd also stay later for non-work related groups I was part of, such as a board game group. I'd definitely say you don't have to spend all of your time in the Google bubble, but as an intern, it can become all-encompassing fairly easily, particularly if that's something you're looking for, which I somewhat was.
