It's most important to read about the research done by the professor and the research group! Depending on your goal (independent project vs. helping others and learning about research) it may be more important to try to come with specific ideas about what you want to work on. That said, it's ok to not know everything, especially the specific techniques or methods the lab uses -- more important are the big picture questions and being interested in the larger research goals.
