Read research articles produced in the lab: look for studies published by the Primary Investigator. Also reach out to current researchers to see what types of research are being done in the lab that haven’t been published yet.
Identify your own unique research interest, and how this interest relates to the work being done in the lab. (KEY: your work should align with the work done in the lab, but it should not be you repeating back what you read the lab did in an earlier study. They’ve already done that! What can you do to make it uniquely your own research and help propel the lab forward?)
