Former Co-op Engineer for Southern Nuclear at Southern Company
over 1 year ago
There are several engineering groups a co-op can work in. I worked in BOP (a systems group), EFIN (troubleshooting), and CMO (Component Maintenance Optimization). In a systems role, you have two or three systems you focus on. You perform walkdowns each week on those systems and perform trending. In EFIN, you have a daily morning meeting where your supervisor will discuss emergent issues in the plant. You will work throughout the day with various groups to fix the issues. CMO dealt with preventative maintenance strategies for various components such as valves and motors. It was probably the most hands-on role, as I spent a lot of time in the plant with the Maintenance group. Regardless of the group you are in, you can expect to get a lot of meaningful work. You will have opportunities to work at your desk and in the plant on any given day.
