If you've worked as a civil engineer at the US Air Force, could you describe your daily tasks and responsibilities? If you could also speak about your experience balancing your personal and professional life while on the job, that'd be much appreciated too

Civil Engineer Assistant at The United States Air Force

The average day can vary depending on what rank you are/what position your in. As a civil engineer assistant there are multiple job titles you can hold. For example you could be on the survey team, which consists of going outside to do site surveys, set up base stations, plot points and elevations for whatever it is you need to survey. You could also be part of the geobase team which consists of updating the maps in ARCGIS or AutoCAD. I’ve done both of those and finally there is the project manager side, which I recently did on my last deployment. I was a project manager in charge of doing progress checks and surveying the contractors doing the work making sure they were following how we wanted our projects built and also checking to make sure they were following safety as well. For me I’m a reservist so balance is kind of difficult, I have a civilian job as a chemist but I have to be able to be ready to go on different missions for a few weeks at a time and leave my civilian job. Last year I left for 6 months for a deployment and this year I’ll be leaving for a few weeks for some training. If you are active duty I believe it might be easier to juggle military with civilian life because your one job will be on the civil engineer team.
