I would say highlight your ability to be flexible and to be able to deal with a wide variety of client many of whom are in stressful situations in an understanding and compassionate manner. To be able to do research on case law and communicate what you discovered clearly and succinctly in both written and oral forms. I would also talk about the ability to self-motivate and work independently while always seeking to add value in ways that are not strictly spelled out in the job description.

Legal Assistant/Case Manager at Donoghue Law

For a Legal Assistant position, I would highlight any legal experience or training, especially with filing pleadings and answering discovery since they do enter into a great deal of personal injury litigation. For a case manager position (I did some of both), I would focus on negotiation skills, medical and legal knowledge, as well as writing and communication skills. Much of the work for case managers and even some of the legal assistants is preparing demand packages to send to insurance companies. Therefore, there is a great deal of value in the ability to analyze treatment records and write an effective demand letter summarizing the injuries, how the injury/accident occurred, and why there is a legal obligation for the other party to compensate the client.

Former Legal Assistant Intern at Craig T Ornell

I worked there as an intern after I received my associated degree from Salter. I do not recommend the place. It was not a good learning experience. Craig was not there to provide feedback and when he was he was in his office the whole time. The girls that worked there at the time stated that they were way underpaid and were treated unfairly. All I did was organize, file and clean. I did not learn anything about being a paralegal and when I learned how low the payment was I didn’t want to purse that career anymore. Craig won’t pay you and he doesn’t look to hire his only looking for free help. The place is a mess.

Main qualities that should be highlighted for legal assistance is organization, pay close attention to details whether it’s in an application or what a client is telling you, have basic technology skills and be willing to work as a team. As for experience you must possess customer service experience, you’re constantly interacting with people around you.

Understanding of your job role will be important, if documents require filing, community events attendance, customer interaction, etc. This role requires multiple levels of involvement it's good to have an understanding of this prior to accepting a role in the company.
