Engineering Intern
ENGINEERING INTERN
At Solaronics Inc. in Auburn Hills, MI, we are looking for an engineering intern to work in our R&D / Engineering Department. With a focus on design and testing, this individual will be involved in all aspects of Solaronics' design, development, testing, and product launch activities for both the Infared Heating and Gas Fired Infrared Burners Departments of Solaronics' business. 20 - 40 hours per week. Will work with class schedules.
Under the direction of, and reporting to, the Chief Engineer, and/or Project Manager.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct basic testing of equipment per standardized test procedures, whereby gathering accurate data to be used in reporting to a customer or for filing into a certification record.
- Assist with the designing, testing and analysis of new designs to determine feasibility of operation, manufacturing, and application.
- Perform necessary tests and prepare documents for the design and development of gaseous fuel burning equipment, predominantly space heating and food service equipment.
- Assist in preparing formal reports to customers on test results, design concepts, and other pertinent data.
- Disassemble, reassemble, or build prototype appliances for the purpose of testing and analyzing.
- The design and development of customized test fixtures.
- Analyze new and existing products in the areas of design, function, styling and other engineering factors to standardize components and units by model, application, design, materials, dimensions, etc. to effect simplification of designs, interchangeable parts, reduced inventories and costs.
- Will need to gain an understanding of the following standards:
American National Standards Institute, Z21 & Z83 subsets (ANSI)
European standards (BS or EN)
Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
- Function as a liaison person between various functional groups i.e. production, services, corporate communications, customer services and the engineering department.
- Comply with all quality and safety regulations, departmental, company policies and procedures.
- Other duties as required.
Education/Skills Required:
- Pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering
- A general knowledge of SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD
- Laboratory experience with sensitive equipment and scientific test methodology
- Familiar with sheet metal fabrication
- Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and mechanical assemblies
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint skills are essential.

- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos
