Geologic Data Preservation Specialist

Salary: $4,093.00 - $5,501.00 Monthly

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity. Are you eager to start a career as a geologist? Do you love data, photography, rocks, and fossils? The Washington Geological Survey has an entry-level position that will help you develop your skills as a geologist in the digital era. Learn about image scanning, photography, and editing while preserving and contributing to a new digital collection of imaged rocks and fossils from the Survey’s long-standing physical collections. Gain digital mapping skills and database management while entering supporting documentation for the collections and other scientific data at risk of deterioration. As part of the Washington Geological Survey's Publications Group, learn about all the maps, reports, and other products the Survey produces.

Responsibilities:

  • Georeferencing and data compilation of geologic reports
  • Scanning documents, field notes, oil and gas logs, and other geologic materials
  • Attributing data using ArcGIS Pro
  • Photographing rock, mineral, and fossil samples
  • Using image editing software
  • Good communication, teamwork, and a positive, diligent work ethic
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn new skills

Required Qualifications: 
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology or geography AND 2 years of professional experience in the geosciences;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Proficiency in basic GIS principles and ArcGIS.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
