POSITION DETAILS
Position Summary:

The Network Engineering Intern is an important role within the Network Engineering Department.  As a Network Engineering Intern, you are expected to have a general understanding of network concepts that will serve as a foundation for broadening your knowledge into other technologies.  Through activities geared toward learning and gaining experience, you will assist the Network Engineering team and collaboratively work through complex problems.  To be successful, you will be curious and have a strong desire to learn new concepts and technology.  You will enjoy performing in a team-based environment to achieve both personal and team goals.  As a Network Engineering Intern, you will help other members of the team achieve success through knowledge sharing and a focus on learning.  You will also be a valued participant in identifying areas of process improvement and supporting company initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Focus learning on networking topics as they relate to the WIN network and its customer 
• Act in a consultative role to both external contacts and internal colleagues  
• Assist in the design and engineering of distributed communication systems consisting of optical transport, ethernet transport and IP-based network infrastructure that together support vital communication services such as voice, data and video transmission  
• Participate in developing requirements to evaluate and integrate new technology into the existing network 
• Handle various functions associated with the operation and maintenance of network elements including but not limited to: problem diagnosis/repair, traffic analysis, network capacity audits and monitoring/alerting
• Collaborate with the Network Management Center to develop support tools
• Courteous and professional communication skills required in direct interactions stakeholders  
• Perform any additional job-related duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and provide our Members with industry leading customer service

Minimum Qualifications:

• Completion of the first year of enrollment in a two-year or four-year Networking-focused degree or program with significant networking characteristics

Additional Position Details:

• Possess understanding of LAN based routing and switching protocols
• Understand the physical properties of various transmission mediums and their respective application to communication networks
• Monitor standard network performance metrics for Service Level Agreements
• Perform functions related but not limited to installation, provisioning, operation, and management of network elements
• Provide the Network Management Center with technical support assistance
• Perform audits of network systems to monitor capacity, resource usage, and analyze traffic patterns
• Support Network Field Operations through involvement in troubleshooting and diagnosing network troubles
• Ability to explain advanced technical concepts in a way that non-technical persons can understand
