Accounting Clerk I
The City of Saint Paul is currently hiring for an Accounting Clerk. Accounting clerks assist accounting sections with organizing and verifying financial information. Accounting Clerk I positions are employed in several departments throughout the City of Saint Paul.
Here’s what you can expect to do:
- Monitor and route AP invoices into the financial system
- Perform entry to intermediate-level bookkeeping work in accordance with City policies
- Maintain accounts payable/receivable ledgers and other financial records
- Audit invoices and vendor statements
- Prepare billings and related receipt and expenditure reports
- Respond to routine inquires and compiles data for financial reports

Information Specific to this Position:
The current opening is in the accounts payable section within the Office of Financial Services located in the City of Saint Paul/Ramsey County Courthouse, 15 W. Kellogg Blvd; Saint Paul, MN 55102. This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes a balance of work on-site (up to 3 days per week - must be on-site every Tuesday and Friday with the AP Team) and remote.
The eligible list created from this assessment may also be used to fill Accounting Clerk I positions as they become available in various departments within the City.

Position Requirements
High school diploma or General Education Development certificate (GED) with two courses in basic bookkeeping.
Six months of vacancy related experience can be substituted for the basic bookkeeping coursework.
Examples of bookkeeping courses: financial reporting, assets and end-of-month activities, basics of Excel® and accounting software, accounting, revenue, expenses, and trial balances, inventory, payroll, math, statistics, liabilities and owner’s equity, or other related classes.

Assessment: Computer Assessment
This computer-based assessment consists of multiple-choice and true or false questions, developed to assess your knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.
Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
Pre-Employment Screening: This position may require a credit check and/or a background check which may include criminal history, and employment history as a condition of employment. Candidates will be required to submit proof of education to Human Resources upon conditional job offer, if qualifying based on education.
