
Music Director
The Music Director provides music leadership for Spirit of Joy’s ministries; he or she is responsible for leading and planning music for Sunday worship, seasonal worship (eg. Christmas Eve, Holy Week), and other occasions where music is used, as well as scheduling/coordinating volunteer musicians.
Responsibilities include:
- Participate as a musician in each worship service - either in the role of the primary music leader or in support of a volunteer musician leading that week
- Lead and/or plan special services throughout the year (eg. Christmas Eve, Holy Week, and mid-week services services during Lent and Advent)
- Ensure music is provided for funerals, weddings, etc., as needed - the music director may either lead (for an additional stipend) or secure another musician
- Participate in planning and coordinating music for non-worship events (eg. Beer and Carols)
- Communicate with volunteer musicians at SoJ and support their work
- Provide office administrator with information needed to prepare worship materials
- Lead rehearsals no less than twice per month
- Participate in worship planning with the pastor
- Oversee scheduling of volunteer musicians for our monthly Rejoicing Spirits worship service
- Coordinate with the choir director to schedule when choir will sing
- Support any youth or children’s choirs formed in conjunction with the Faith Formation Team
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Ensure licensing rights (CCLI, etc.) are secured and all documentation is properly maintained
- Invite members of Spirit of Joy to offer their musical gifts, cultivating a team mentality
- Assist Director of Youth and Family Ministries with annual children/youth led worship service
- Other relevant duties as assigned by pastor
Skills Required or Preferred:
- Play a lead instrument (piano preferred, guitar considered)
- Provide lead vocals (will consider a highly gifted pianist who is not a vocalist)
- Display a professional level of musical talent
- Working knowledge of a wide range of worship music - and openness to expanding repertoire
- Theological understanding of the role music plays in worship (and/or willingness to develop/deepen this understanding)
- Composition background preferred, but not required
