Organist/Music Associate

Organist/Music Associate(Part-Time)

General Statement of Duties 

Provide worship service music and hymns, accompany adult choir, and assist with other ensembles in support of the Music Ministry of the Church. 

Distinguishing Features of the Class 

An employee in this class is the organist, pianist, and accompanist for the adult choir. Other duties include assistance with youth and children’s choirs and any other ensembles as needed. The employee serves as part of a Church team and works with the Minister of Music & Worship Experience to coordinate the music program of the Church. Work involves public contact with volunteers and sometimes paid musicians and requires special creative abilities in providing music for the various and special Church programs. The music associate must exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with Church volunteers, Church staff, and members. The Minister of Music & Worship Experience supervises this position.

 Duties and Responsibilities 

Essential Duties and Tasks 

• Provide appropriate organ/piano service music for regular Sunday worship services and special services including, but not limited to Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. 

• Accompany, on organ or piano, the Sanctuary Choir and soloists or other ensembles as needed. 

• Accompany rehearsals of the Sanctuary Choir. 

• Play for weddings and funerals as requested. 

• Discern adjustments needed to the organ and be present when the tuners are on-site. 

• Participate in weekly worship planning meetings. 

• Direct the PraiseRingers handbell group or other musical ensemble. 

• Coordinate with the Music Librarian and handbell director(s) to maintain the music library database. 

• Collaborate with the Minister of Music to coordinate communion table and pulpit paraments, and decorations for special musical programs. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

• Thorough and extensive skill with piano and organ. 

• Optional, but not required, handbell ensemble experience. 

• Competence in sight reading anthems. 

• Willingness to modify work schedule and provide services on weekends, nights, and special functions. 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Church members, music volunteers, and the staff. 

Physical Requirements 

Dress needs to be neat, clean, and appropriate. 

Desirable Education and Experience 

A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in church music, or related field, with organ as the major instrument, or at least five years’ experience as a church organist. 

Special Requirements 

Must have a current driver’s license. Background Check will be required.
