Job Summary:
The WIC Enrollment Specialist plays a vital role in supporting maternal and child health by facilitating enrollment into the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program at Axis Community Health. This position is responsible for assisting eligible individuals with the WIC application process, verifying documentation, scheduling appointments, and ensuring seamless coordination with clinical and community health services. The specialist serves as a frontline resource, educating patients on WIC benefits, eligibility requirements, and available services, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local program guidelines. This position also serves as a liaison between clients, the WIC program, and healthcare providers to improve health outcomes for women, infants, and children.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Two (2) years of clerical experience in healthcare or social services setting, preferably with low-income families or diverse populations.
- Previous experience with WIC or public assistance programs is highly desirable.
- Understanding of WIC program goals, eligibility criteria, and service delivery method.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish language is preferred, fluency in both written and oral.
- Comfortable using Electronic Health Records (EHR) and WIC data systems.
- Strong analytical, employee relations, and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent writing, business communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to interact effectively and in a supportive manner with persons of all backgrounds.
- Proactive, self-motivated and able to work independently as well as on a team with the ability to exercise sound independent judgment.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and a professional demeanor and must positively represent the organization at all times.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and professional working relationships.
- Must be able to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate.
- Must be able to be at work regularly and on time.

- A can-do attitude, attention to detail, with the ability to organize.
- Ability to type a minimum of 35 WPM with minimal errors. Proficient in administrative tasks with emphasis on typing accuracy and proper spelling.
- Must have good computer skills using Microsoft Office and the ability to use Axis departmental systems.
- Must be able to use office equipment (i.e. copier, fax, etc.).
This is a part-time, temporary position for 4 months working 16 hours per week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Educate clients on the purpose, benefits, and eligibility requirements of the WIC program.
- Conduct initial screening and interviews to applicants to determine eligibility for WIC services.
- Provides a clear and accurate explanation of the WIC program, shopping at the grocery store and explains WIC Allowed Foods listed in the WIC shopping guide.
- Schedules appointments for nutrition education, assessments, benefit issuance, and answers the phone in a courteous and engaging manner.
- Determines applicant’s residency, income and medical eligibility.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with WIC and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) policies.
- Communicates with participants and collects required documents via tele-task.
- Responds to concerns from WIC participants in a positive, understanding and tactful manner.
- Reviews recorded messages from WIC participants and initiates appropriate follow-up communication.
- Provides participants’ information on usage of the WIC application.
- Follows up on missed appointments and actively works to re-engage participants.
- Provides accurate and relevant breastfeeding information and refers moms for breastfeeding support and follow-up for breastfeeding problems.
- Support outreach and community engagement activities to increase WIC enrollment.
- Provide reminders, follow-ups, and rescheduling assistance as needed.
- Refer clients to internal services, such as medical, dental, behavioral health, and external community resources.
- Participate in WIC staff meetings, and attend other meetings and training events as assigned.
- May be required to perform other related duties, responsibilities and special projects as assigned.

Physical: Occasionally required to carry/lift/push/pull/move up to 20lbs. Frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks such as typing, writing, reaching over the shoulder, reaching over the head, reaching outward, sitting, walking on various surfaces, standing, and bending. Occasional travel to other Axis health centers and other occasional travel will be required.
Equipment: Frequently required to use repetitive motion of hands and feet to operate a computer keyboard, telephone, copier, and other office equipment for extended periods.
Sensory: Frequently required to read documents, written reports, and signage. Must be able to distinguish normal sounds with some background noise, as in answering the phone, interacting with staff etc. Must be able to speak clearly, understand normal communication, and be understood. Must be able to see clearly and have the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships to see objects where and as they actually are.
Cognitive: Must be able to analyze the information being received, count accurately, concentrate and focus on the given task, summarize the information being received, accurately interpret written data, synthesize information from multiple sources, write summaries as needed, interpret written or verbal instructions, and recognize social or professional behavioral cues.
Environmental Conditions: Frequent exposure to varied office (medical clinic/office) environments. Rare exposure to dust and loud noises.
