This Operator-in-Training (OIT) position is designed to provide foundational experience in wastewater treatment while preparing you to pursue professional certification. You’ll work alongside licensed operators and gain practical experience in plant operations, laboratory testing, and equipment maintenance—all while contributing to public health and environmental protection.
About the Role:
As a WWTF Operator-in-Training, you'll be part of a supportive and knowledgeable operations team at our wastewater treatment facility. Under close supervision, you'll:
- Learn to monitor treatment processes and perform basic lab tests (e.g., BOD, pH, solids, chlorine).
- Conduct equipment checks, and preventative maintenance on tanks, pumps, and mechanical systems.
- Gather, calculate, and report performance data to management and regulatory agencies.
- Supporting a safe and efficient working environment through inspections and hazard mitigation.
This position offers hands on experience and the opportunity to train toward your Washington State Operator-in-Training certification and Group II Wastewater Treatment Certification, with clear pathways toward advancement in the water/wastewater utility field. Position Details:
- Term: This is a limited-term appointment lasting for 2 years. At the conclusion of the 2-year term if the incumbent has met the licensing and job requirements, they will be moved to a permanent Operator position.
- Work Hours: This is a full-time position. Schedules vary but typically will be 4/10's with either Mondays or Fridays off.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Interest in environmental services, utilities, or public works
- Ability to earn a Washington State Operator-in-Training certification within 12 months of hire
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License
- Industrial First Aid/CPR Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or experience in biology, chemistry, or a mechanical/technical field
- 6+ months of experience in utility maintenance, public works, or related roles
Hourly Pay Range:
- Grade 10: Entry-level, no certification required
- $31.83 – $42.46
- Grade 11: Group I Certification
- $34.05 - $45.63
- Grade 12: Group II Certification
- $36.43 – $48.83
