Uranium Recovery Engineer (Environmental Engineer)

The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Environmental Engineer position in the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on experience and the job level offered within the series.  

Job Description

  • Evaluate Uranium mill tailing impoundment designs, operating and work plans, and related technical reports
  • Evaluate Uranium mill decommissioning plans and associated cost estimates
  • Perform compliance inspections and communicate findings with both the facility and Division management
  • Evaluate environmental reports, including effluent monitoring reports

Best Qualified Candidate 
The best qualified candidate will have the following key competencies:

  • A highly skilled and adaptable candidate who can seamlessly integrate geotechnical design expertise with a strong foundation in environmental monitoring.
  • Demonstrated competency in environmental regulatory compliance, evidenced by direct experience and familiarity with NRC and EPA laws and regulations. The ability to interpret and apply these complex regulations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, effectively conveying intricate legal and technical concepts to diverse audiences, including licensed facilities, Division management, and the public. This includes the ability to tailor messages for optimal understanding.
  • Strong teamwork and adaptability, demonstrating flexibility when collaborating with colleagues and managing fluctuating workloads. A professional approach to giving and receiving feedback to foster a positive and productive environment.
  • A keen sense of curiosity and a commitment to continuous improvement, proactively identifying and pursuing opportunities for enhanced processes and outcomes.

Preferences
Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, or geological engineering, or a related engineering discipline, including advanced degrees.
  • OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.
  • Professional Engineer License from the State of Utah

Job Series

The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Engineer I with a salary range of $25.33 - $40.19, an Environmental Engineer II with a salary range of $29.82 - $47.30 per hour, or an Environmental Engineer III with a salary range of $33.23 – 52.69 per hour. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on experience and the job level offered within the series.

Work Location

This position may be eligible for a hybrid of both in-office/hybrid work schedule (2 days a week required in office and any mandatory in office meetings) and remote work days (work must be performed in Utah). Our office is located at 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.  Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah. As such employees should either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
