Technician, Library Services

Job Summary

The Library Services Technician supports the daily operations of the NTC Library by managing cataloging, maintaining the Integrated Library System, and ensuring access to both print and digital resources. This position serves as a key point of contact for students, faculty, and staff, providing research support and connecting users to relevant learning resources. The role also curates materials to support curriculum needs, maintains library data and archives, and collaborates on digital services and system updates. With a focus on accuracy, service, and innovation, this position contributes to student success and institutional effectiveness.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Library Systems and Cataloging

Catalog library holdings (original and copy cataloging), perform subject analysis, and classify materials using national standards established by the American Library Association (ALA).

Administer the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), serving as the primary contact for troubleshooting issues and supporting system functionality.

Monitor and resolve issues related to the discoverability of library resources in WorldShare Discovery.

Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the library’s database and catalog records.

Manage patron records in OCLC-WMS, including routine updates and imports from Workday.

 

User Services and Support

Serve as the first point of contact for students, faculty, and staff, providing high-quality customer service and connecting patrons to appropriate Timberwolf Learning Commons (TLC) resources and services.

Offer reference and research assistance, guiding users in locating and utilizing digital and print resources.

Provide individual and group instruction to support library research skills and promote student academic success on an occasional, as-needed basis.

 

Resource Curation and Digital Services

Curate digital and print resources, including Open Educational Resources (OER), to support course curriculum development and NTC’s affordability initiatives.

Maintain and create subject bibliographies and research guides that support program-specific and topical areas.

Coordinate updates to the library’s online resources and website in collaboration with IT and Marketing, ensuring current and accurate access to virtual library services.

Maintain and troubleshoot access to online databases, using vendor documentation and support.

 

Data and Reporting

Compile library usage statistics and generate regular internal and external reports.

Document library resources and technology in support of institutional accreditation and quality assurance requirements.

Maintain accurate inventory of library collections across all campus locations.

 

Archives and Collection Development

Develop and maintain the NTC Library Archives, including the organization, cataloging, and processing of historical college materials.

Recommend books, ebooks, and other materials that align with academic programs and ensure a relevant, up-to-date library collection.

Perform technical processing and routine maintenance of library materials.

 

Collaboration and Representation

Represent the NTC Library on applicable WISPALS groups and committees.

Train and support student workers as needed as part of daily operations.

 

Other Duties

Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and strategic goals of the College.

 

Minimum Qualifications Required

In limited circumstances, NTC may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.

 

Education:  Associate's Degree (or Equivalent)

Associate degree required in library technology, library services, or related field with a minimum of 15 credits in library science.

Bachelor’s degree in library science preferred.

Master’s  Degree of Library Science and/or Information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited university preferred.

 

Experience:  1 Year

 

Additional Experience Information:

One year of experience in library services or equivalent education.

Proficiency in cataloging using MARC standards and bibliographic utilities, including importing and editing electronic resource records.

Familiarity with library reference tools, research techniques, and electronic resources.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to work independently.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build positive relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Working knowledge of copyright law, Open Educational Resources (OER), and Microsoft Office applications.

Experience with OCLC WMS, WorldShare Discovery, and SpringShare products such as LibGuides preferred.

Demonstrated ability to assess library materials for damage or mistreatment, and take appropriate corrective action based on established guidelines and best practices.

Familiarity with academic library systems and services is a plus.
