Job Summary:
Oversee the non-instructional departments within the District.  Provide assistance in long-term strategic planning and development related to finances, negotiations, and facilities. Provide support and input to the Superintendent and to the Executive Leadership Team relative to all organizational initiatives.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Superintendent, Board of Education, and Board Committees to provide input and implement goals.
  • Assist the Director of Finance in forecasting the General Fund budget to determine budget/negotiation strategies, including analysis of enrollment trends and foundation grants.
  • In consultation with the Director of Finance, provide budget information during the negotiation process with teacher, secretary, bus driver, food service and custodial/maintenance union groups.
  • Participate in strategic planning for facility and related financial issues for bonding, and use of the Building and Site Sinking Fund.
  • Develop policies, regulations and internal procedures to ensure standardized operations.
  • Prepare and submit to the Director of Finance by June 1, a written detailed budget for efficient and effective operations under his/her leadership.
  • Oversee the daily student transportation system.
  • Oversee the maintenance of facilities ensuring a safe and orderly environment and attractive appearance of facilities and grounds.
  • Initiate and direct research and development essential to the improvement of the Maintenance and Operations Program.
  • Work with the Director of Finance to oversee the food service operations including on-site management by the third-party vendor, to oversee purchasing functions and independent audits.
  • Conduct school board and millage voting to comply with election laws.
  • Supervise and annually evaluate all personnel directly reporting your office; assist others in the evaluation of personnel in the operations domain. 
  • Counsel and assist in the planning of new sites, facilities and grounds, and renovation of existing facilities. Direct efficient and effective procedures and criteria for the inspection and evaluation of progress, workmanship, and quality of construction on such items. 
  • In consultation with other relevant district personnel, prepare written specifications for all biddable items relating to maintenance, building and grounds improvements
  • Oversee the acquisition and disposal of school properties in consultation with the Superintendent.
  • Make periodic inspections of all District properties.
  • Prepare reports for the Board of Education as required.
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan Administrator Certificate.
  • Master’s degree or higher from and accredited college or university.
  • 10 or more years of successful experience in teaching and central office administration.
  • Maintains a high level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Proficient computer and document skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability pro interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
