Job Description and Duties
This position will assist permanent staff at the Warm Springs and Coyote Valley Fish Hatcheries as needed including the following duties:
- Feeding and caring for juvenile and adult fish
- Cleaning fish rearing tanks, pick up dead fish, and keep simple records of fish losses
- Monitoring condition and behavior of fish and notifying supervisor and/or permanent staff of any potential problems
- Monitoring in-flowing water conditions, alerting supervisor and/or permanent staff of potential problems
- Caring for steelhead eggs and fish at various stages of development
- Measuring/weighing eggs and fish and assessing their health and condition
- Alerting supervisors and/or permanent staff of potential problems while doing health assessments
- Assisting with fish weight counts, grading, inventorying, loading, and planting of fish
- In the absence of permanent staff at the site, assuming more responsibility for site activities such as fish stocking
- Cleaning incubator stacks, jars, fish rearing units and equipment
- Using handheld power tools to perform basic maintenance at the facility, and performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks that include: weeding, mowing, painting, plumbing, grounds care, cleaning and maintaining buildings and equipment; welding (gas, arc and tig), fabricating equipment out of wood and metal; and operating gas and electrical powered equipment and hand tools -- drills, saws, and sanders.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Requires standing and walking on uneven, and slippery surfaces. Involves standing up to 8 hours a day, adipose fin clipping fish. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to swim 50 yards and stay afloat for at least five minutes. Must be willing to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be prepared to travel using a state vehicle. Requires the periodic required use of respirators and participation in the Department’s respirator protection program, and other required personal protective equipment (PPE) and certifications. A uniform shall be worn in accordance with CDFW’s Operations Manual Section 12901 uniform standards.
Additional Requirements: This position requires the employee to stay onsite at Coyote Valley Fish Facility and Warm Springs Hatchery in rotation, perform standby duties and respond to emergency call-backs.
