Summer Internship Program

The City of Pittsburg, CA is seeking enthusiastic and motivated students to join our 2025 Summer Internship Program. 

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government operations, build professional skills, and contribute to meaningful public service projects.  Interns will work alongside experienced professionals across various city departments and work between 15-20 hours per week (in-person, remotely, or combination) during the months of mid-June and mid-August.  We have internships available in the Public Works Department, Housing Authority, Police Department, and Environmental Services.

General Duties:

  • Assist with real-world projects that include research, data entry, and project coordination
  • Support department staff in day-to-day operations
  • Attend internal meetings and/or community outreach events
  • Help prepare reports, presentations, or communications
  • Learn about municipal operations and public service functions

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an accredited high school, college, or university
  • Interest in public service, public works, community development, or relevant field
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of basic research and statistical research method and techniques

Police Department Intern:
This internship will offer students, who are interested in a possible career in law enforcement, a rewarding and insightful experience by providing an education-based program working in all divisions in the Pittsburg Police Department. Students will work with experienced Police Officers, Community Service Specialists and other civilian employees on a rotational basis, in various assignments such as file management, front counter service, and community events.

Housing Authority Intern:
Responsibilities include providing front counter customer service and phone support, ensuring prompt and courteous communication with clients. The position requires accessing various computer systems, which entails completing the Rules of Behavior training and signing the HUD certification. Key duties involve receiving and handling client documents, scanning and templating them for digital recordkeeping in Laserfiche. Additional tasks include processing incoming mail, mailing out recertification packets, and preparing records for secure shredding, ensuring compliance with data management protocols.

Environmental Services - Solid Waste Division Intern:
Responsibilities include conducting research and summarizing solid waste franchise agreements to compare key elements, services provided, and associated fees. The role also involves analyzing transfer station and solid waste facility operating agreements to evaluate their requirements and provisions. Additionally, the intern will perform OnBase database searches to locate easements, franchise agreements, leases, and similar documents executed with the City. This includes determining which agreements are still active, identifying those that require renewal or renegotiation, and verifying whether proper payments have been made.

Capital Improvement Project Intern:
Responsibilities may include assisting with the planning, coordination, and tracking of infrastructure projects such as roadways, sidewalks, drainage systems, and public facilities. Duties can involve reviewing project plans and schedules, organizing and maintaining project documentation, and supporting data entry and reporting tasks. The intern may also conduct site visits to observe project progress and assist in compiling information for budget and funding analysis. This internship provides valuable exposure to the planning and execution of municipal capital projects and an understanding of the role Public Works plays in community development.

Public Works' Fleet Division Intern: 
Responsibilities include assisting with data collection, inventory management, and routine vehicle maintenance tasks such as oil changes. The internship also offers introductory experience with the implementation process of GPS technology, pending approval. Designed for a recently graduated high school senior with an interest in fleet operations or heavy equipment careers, this opportunity provides valuable hands-on experience and insight into the day-to-day functions of a fleet services department

Public Works Department's Urban Forestry/Street Trees Division Intern:
Responsibilities include supporting field data collection with a strong interest in forestry, urban forests, and related environmental topics. The role involves assisting with tree inventory verification and data input, participating in soil sampling efforts, and contributing to various community outreach activities. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to urban forestry practices while supporting data accuracy and public engagement initiatives.
