Job Description and Duties

Would you like to work outdoors as part of a team making a hands-on, tangible contribution to the conservation of California's reptile, amphibian, and fish? The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Invasive Species Program is seeking a conscientious team player to work as a Scientific Aid to work at field sites in Folsom and Roseville to remove non-native watersnakes. Under the the general supervision of the Environmental Program Manager, and lead of the Project lead Senior Environmental Scientist, teams of Scientific Aids deploy snake traps, check traps daily, remove and identifying captured animals, occasional participate in hand-capture efforts, transport live snakes, and retrieve, clean, and repair snake traps.

 

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

 

The language below is required for these NT classifications.

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

• Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.

• Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.

• Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.

• Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

Incumbents must wear a uniform shirt, and must handle non-venomous snakes. Traps must be checked daily, therefore daily hours vary and working weekends and holidays is required. Work is conducted almost entirely outdoors, and occasionally in extreme weather conditions including temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Worksites include urban wetland/marsh habitat, vegetated creek and streambeds, drainages, golf course waterways/natural areas, and public accessible day-use areas. The environmental conditions vary from shallow to waist-deep water, which are typically stagnant and surrounded by dense, overgrown vegetation. Terrain is vegetated and uneven. Chest waders are required in all waterbodies and some require the use of a personal flotation device (life jacket) and float tube for access.
