Intern, Economic and Social Affairs
This internship is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work, as well as the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development. The intern will report to the Communications and Logistical Team Leads coordinating secretariat support to the preparations of the WSSD2. The intern will assist in the preparations of the World Social Summit 2025, officially titled the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2). The General Assembly, in its resolution 78/261, decided to convene WSSD2 to address the gaps and recommit to the Copenhagen Declaration for Social Development and Programme of Action and its implementation and give momentum towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The Summit is expected to be a pivotal moment for refocusing global efforts on inclusive, people-centred policymaking and action. Resolution 78/318 decided that the Summit will take place in Doha, Qatar, between 4-6 November 2025. The Summit builds on the 1995 World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, which emphasized commitments to social inclusion, eradicating poverty, and achieving full productive employment and decent work, aligning with modern challenges and aspirations for inclusive well-being for all. DESA supports the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, as the Summit secretariat, in his delegated role as the Summit Secretary-General. The five (5) core functions of the secretariat are: 1. Intergovernmental Support 2. Analytical and Substantive Support 3. Multistakeholder Engagement 4. Communication and Outreach 5. Logistics and host country arrangements This support is led by DESA-DISD under the responsibility and coordination of its Director. This support is delivered by 5 corresponding teams, each with a designated Team Lead. The five core functions are inter-related, and all teams will be working in close collaboration. Internship Responsibilities The intern will be part of the team supporting the above preparatory process towards the Second World Summit for Social Development and may be responsible for the following tasks: - Producing summaries of meetings, events, and seminars relevant to the Summit preparations. - Supporting content creation and dissemination by drafting engaging materials for social media and the Summit website, helping develop key messages, visual assets, and promotional materials, and assisting with translation or review of content in other UN languages to enhance global outreach. - Assisting with media and performance monitoring by tracking media coverage related to the Summit’s themes, flagging relevant developments, and compiling social media engagement and performance reports. - Assisting with organizing and coordinating logistical aspects of Summit preparations, including scheduling meetings, preparing meeting materials, and tracking action points to ensure timely follow-up. - Support task management tools to organize, assign, and update tasks for team collaboration. - Supporting the coordination of the UN Interdepartmental Task Force by maintaining participant lists, sending meeting invitations, drafting meeting summaries, and following up on agreed actions. - Supporting Information Management, by helping to compile and organize key documents, timelines, and deliverables to facilitate smooth communication across workstreams, ensuring logistical milestones are met in alignment with broader Summit preparations. - Performing other related tasks as requested.
