Intern - Mayor's Office
Position Summary:
The Mayor’s Office is seeking applicants who are interested in a career in public service, City governance, the legislative process, serving their community. The student intern will work alongside the Mayor on City initiated projects and activities. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of City governance including community engagement.
Hours: Up to 20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.
Timeframe: Summer (flexibility with start and end dates)
LEARNING GOALS
- Develop an understanding of government operations
- Expand knowledge on office functions
- Grow communication skills
- Learn how policies are developed, implemented, and communicated at the city level
- Interact professionally with city staff, constituents, and external stakeholders
Responsibilities:
The work below is representative of the scope of work to be performed. Typical duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assists the Mayor with initiatives and legislative priorities
Supports the Mayor in meetings and at events
Works on special projects
Helps with constituent case work: answers calls, responds to emails, etc.
Provides input to the Mayor on city related issues, programs, and activities.
Assists City Administration staff within the scope of the intern position as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be enrolled in an Associates, Bachelors, or Masters program in communications, political science, or other related field.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Qualifications & Skills:
Able to communicate in a professional manner with strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.
Excellent computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office, Teams, Canva, etc.
Ability to work both independently and with others.
Dependability, flexibility, and ability to work well under pressure.
Ability to work in a confidential manner.
Openness to learning and growing through the internship experience.
