Summer Internship Objectives

Responsibilities of Intern:

Assist in haying operations by operating equipment properly and safely, and by maintaining the mechanical integrity of any/all pieces of equipment that he/she operates.

Assist in working cattle, both on foot and on horseback, while using flight zone and low-stress cattle handling techniques, as well as keeping him/herself, his/her horse, and the cattle safe and healthy.

Learn the basics/concepts of practices such as synchronization, artificial insemination, and checking for pregnancy in cattle via ultrasound.

Assist in accurate, detailed, and honest record keeping in order to maintain the integrity of our in-herd database.

Work diligently at any/all tasks assigned to him/her; ask questions to avoid confusion and learn processes; use skills and techniques learned throughout the internship to make judgment calls and decisions. 

Assist the ranch employees with all phases of ranch work, including but not limited to: fencing, irrigating, haying, cattle work, horse work, and office work/record keeping. Learn from and work with visiting professors and/or veterinarians. Maintain a positive and safe working environment for him/herself as well as fellow interns and coworkers. Maintain the living quarters, work spaces, and work vehicles to a clean and useable standard.

Responsibilities of Cooperator (what students can expect from their supervisor while taking this internship):

Provide a safe and enjoyable working environment while teaching the basics of ranch and cattle herd management. Provide a monthly salary of $1200/month, plus housing and utilities and a ranch vehicle to use while at work; allow for time off throughout the week or weekend.
