Grape Quality Control Analyst

POSITION:                         AM Shift – GRAPE QUALITY CONTROL ANALYST 

DEPARTMENT:                LAB 

REPORTS TO:                   WINEMAKING

DATE RANGE:                   MID-AUGUST THROUGH END OF HARVEST (Early November)

HOURS                                 MONDAY – SATURDAY, 03:45AM – 01:00PM

HOURLY RATE:                 $21/hr.           

BONUS:                                $500 end of Harvest Bonus

POSITION SUMMARY:  We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our laboratory team for the upcoming harvest. The Grape Quality Control Analyst will work closely with the Winemaking team to ensure the incoming fruit meets quality standards and set maturity (sugar) levels. This position will assess grape quality quantitatively using analytical instruments as well as qualitatively using visual and tactile cues. We believe great wine is made in the vineyard, and this position is a critical step in ensuring excellence in our final product. This position will give you the opportunity to learn all aspects of the winery laboratory, gaining experience in enology and in a state-of-the-art laboratory. 

Our ideal applicant will be an early riser, dependable, detail oriented, curious, and efficient in a fast-paced environment. The internship will be from Mid-August through end of Harvest (early November). The shift is Monday-Saturday, 03:45am-01.00PM. This is a paid internship.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Daily Startup of the Sugar Test-Stand Facility, including instrument standardization and calibration.
  • Operate hydraulic Grape Sampler Probe.
  • Perform quantitative analysis such as sugar concentration, pH, Titratable Acidity, and temperature on incoming fruit.
  • Perform qualitative visual and tactile inspections on incoming fruit. 
  • Accurately perform and report all analyses for review in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
  • Promptly report fruit quality and equipment issues to Winemaking and/or Lab Personnel.
  • May perform daily cleaning and shutdown for Test-Stand equipment and facilities in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
  • Help Lab Team pull samples, process micro-fermentations, and conduct various analysis on fermenting wines and past vintage wines as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Must be quality focused, punctual, and reliable.
  • Ability to self-start and prioritize.
  • Must be team oriented and willing to assist others. 
  • Must be able to work long hours and weekends when needed during harvest.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Position includes extensive walking, standing, and climbing. 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Adheres to all health and safety protocols put in place. 
  • Must be able to pass a background test and drug screening.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

The lab contains hazardous chemicals. The cellar and barrel warehouse present a challenging environment: hot and cold, wet, slippery, and often noisy.   Must be able to walk up and down stairs, ladders, and mobile platforms.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, twist, and be able to lift and carry up to 55 lbs.
