Utility Pole Inspector

Classification: Engineering Associate 

Work Hours: 40+ hours / week: M - F

About the Role:  Independently inspects and audits KUB utility poles, ensuring all poles are surveyed on a multi-year cycle across entire distribution system. Accurately enters pole data into portable handheld electronic field devices to download into KUB systems. Pole audit inspector will be assigned grids of poles to be inspected. Detailed observations will be conducted using a series of steps to evaluate a utility pole’s condition. The inspector will collect data at each pole including verifying GIS information, pole joint-use attachments, GPS coordinates, and basic pole attributes by traditional ground inspections and the potential for aerial inspections using unmanned aircraft systems (drones). Performs self-quality checks of electronic and hard copy data for accuracy. Receive training to perform storm response duties with other department members. Must be able to work overtime as required.

 

Qualifications

 

Physical Requirements:

Works outside 85% to 100% of the time in all types of weather conditions as the job requires. Must be able to walk long distances, up to five miles and more, daily while carrying portable equipment weighing approximately ten pounds over rough terrain. Work that is performed in the office is under normal office conditions. May be required to work unusual hours from time to time, as operational issues require.

 

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent

Ability to be proficient in use of mobile data and/or electronic data collection devices

Ability to communicate effectively to the customer or public about safety surveys when approached

Ability to work independently , in small groups, or a team to achieve department and KUB goals

Valid driver’s license

Preferred Requirements: 

Three (3) or more years of experience with engineering, construction, or inspections

Two year technical degree or series of related coursework

Remote Pilot Certification from FAA

Ability to utilize computer-aided drafting software

Demonstrate high work standards with quality in mind

Basic computer skills including GIS, CIS, and Excel
