Manager, Testing - Integrated Photonics

 

Job Title: Manager, Testing – Integrated Photonics. Location: College Park, Maryland. This job is posted by Quantum Jobs USA, on the behalf of IonQ careers.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement manual and automated metrology stations for testing passive and active optical components such as waveguides, modulators, and photodetectors.
  • Oversee the operation, accuracy, and continuous improvement of all optical test setups.
  • Manage the procurement and organization of lab space and specialized equipment, including cleanroom and laser safety environments.
  • Prioritize and coordinate the metrology workload based on broader company goals;
  • Analyze complex data, produce clear summaries, and present findings to cross-functional engineering and physics teams.
  • Collaborate closely with design teams to define testing requirements and develop standardized procedures.
  • Manage external vendors and assess outsourcing opportunities for specific metrology tasks;
  • Lead efforts in lab automation using sensors, microcontrollers, and software (Python, etc.)
  • Support the design, acquisition, and calibration of testing tools and materials;
  • Train junior staff, ensuring technical and professional growth aligned with IonQ’s mission.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • 10+ years hands-on experience testing optical elements, including photonic integrated circuits.
  • 5+ years experience managing lab environments with multiple concurrent testing operations.
  • Strong skills in optoelectronic metrology techniques and lab automation tools;
  • Proficiency in Python and mechanical CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks PDM);
  • Demonstrated success in statistical data analysis and technical reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse technical and executive audiences.

Preferred:

  • 15+ years experience with optical test station setup and vendor management.
  • Deep knowledge of optical calibration and high-speed measurement systems.
