Internship - Video Production

Lights, camera, action…Live Green in Plano! Do you enjoy and excel at video production? Join the City of Plano’s Sustainability division (Live Green in Plano) this summer to showcase your skills and passion for high-quality content creation. In this paid internship, you’ll take the lead in creating a library of brief how-to videos highlighting sustainable behaviors: water and energy conservation, recycling and waste reduction, gardening, composting and more. Build your professional portfolio while helping Plano residents make environmentally friendly, healthy choices.

The typical schedule is 20 – 35 hours per week, with most hours worked on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The schedule is somewhat flexible, applicants should note their availability in the appropriate screening question.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the bachelor’s degree Intern is responsible for working on special projects by researching, analyzing, and providing reports and/or presentation developed from research and analysis; provides administrative support to the assigned department or business unit. The Sustainability Intern is responsible for creating a library of how-to videos highlighting sustainable behaviors.

  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes data from various sources for a variety of topics related to assigned project and prepares reports.
  • Assists professional staff with the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of new and existing programs by providing administrative support for completion of special projects.
  • May conduct surveys related to assigned area to obtain and analyze; prepares summary reports.
  • Attends meetings related to assigned projects which may include City Council meetings, planning sessions, staff meetings, committee or commission meetings, and others to observe the decision- making process in municipal government.
  • Prepares reports and/or presentations regarding the status or completion of assigned projects; describes current issues, identifies and appropriate methodology to address issues, researches applicable data, analyzes and interprets data, identifies and recommends alternatives, and summarizes and/or presents findings.
  • May respond to citizen requests for information electronically or in person.
  • Utilize a variety of software such as Adobe, iMovie, and Canva to film, edit, and produce short videos. Works directly with the Sustainability & Environmental Education Division team members in various areas of focus such as water conservation, recycling and waste management, community engagement, gardening, litter awareness, outreach and education, volunteer management, sustainability, and marketing.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Typical DecisionsThe incumbent prioritizes multiple tasks and projects to meet deadlines for milestones and project completion; evaluates potential research sources and determines appropriate data sources and methodology; identifies potential problems and recommends solutions; decides appropriate ways to compile and present status reports and findings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Basic principles, practices, and methods of project management, public administration, and budgeting and research techniques gained through coursework; working knowledge of standard office equipment and software used for word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and presentations. Experience with video filming, editing and production is required. Basic knowledge of sustainability is preferred. Ability to work independently under general direction. 

Skill in: Researching, collecting, compiling, analyzing, reporting, and presenting findings and recommendations regarding project work and assignments; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; effective collaboration with others; using standard office equipment including copiers, printers, and computer equipment.

Education: Current enrollment in or recent completion of a Bachelor’s degree program in media arts, RTVF, marketing, sustainability, urban planning, public administration, public policy, or related field. Strong research and writing skills, with attention to detail. At least 30+ semester hours of college level courses is required. 

Experience: None. Experience working for a public entity is preferred.

 

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Must have a Texas Class C driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working ConditionsThis is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a  computerscreen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

 

Plus, when assigned to Sustainability: Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and outdoors in varying climates. Use standard office equipment, including a computer, with the ability to traversing uneven terrain carrying tools and equipment to visit various City sites; vision to film and edit, to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, to operate standard office equipment, to turn faucets on and off, manipulate doorknobs, conduct tests and to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information, obtain samples, and set up equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
