Eligibility: Must be 18 years or older Living in the Charleston County Area (Housing or stipend for housing not provided)
Position Overview
Charleston County Public Works is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS & Asset Management Intern to support our Asset Management Program. This opportunity is ideal for a student or recent graduate interested in civil engineering, geography, GIS, or public infrastructure management. The intern will assist in data collection, GIS mapping, and system analysis to help maintain and improve county infrastructure data.
Program Duration & Schedule
Start Date (Orientation): June 13th
Department Assignment: June 16th – July 24th
Graduation & Program Completion: July 24th
Total Hours: 120 hours (approx. 4-hour shifts per day, depending on department needs and intern’s schedule)
Additional Training: Soft skills workshops provided periodically throughout the program
Key Responsibilities
Collect and update field data for county-maintained roads and drainage systems.
Support GIS mapping projects using ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, and Collector.
Perform spatial and tabular data analysis to inform asset management decisions.
Conduct QA/QC of data in the County’s Work Management System.
Create maps, dashboards, and reports for internal stakeholders.
Produce data products to support Engineering, Field Operations, and Stormwater teams.
Document workflows and update training/reference materials.
Participate in team meetings and learn public infrastructure maintenance practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.
Familiarity with ArcGIS products (ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Collector, Dashboards).
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Willingness to perform fieldwork in outdoor environments.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with data entry, analysis, or reporting is a plus.
