About the Position:
The City of Grand Junction is looking for a skilled and responsible Water System Operator who will perform maintenance and technical duties and responsibilities in the operation and maintenance of the City’s Kannah Creek water treatment plant, distribution system, Grand Mesa reservoir structures, and water supply pipelines and ditches. The ideal candidate will understand and ensure compliance with City and mandated water quality standards. Other tasks may include but not be limited to inspection, operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of Kannah Creek water distribution, and operating specialized equipment in the cleaning and maintenance of the water distribution system.
About the Water Division
The City of Grand Junction Water Department provides drinking water for about 30,000 customers. Our customers enjoy being the first users of pristine snowmelt off the Grand Mesa, which is diverted out of Kannah Creek and into Juniata Reservoir before being piped 20 miles to the Water Treatment Plant. The Water Department has a staff of 32 employees working together in areas such as Pipeline Maintenance, Water Treatment, Water Supply, Customer Service, and Environmental Laboratory Services in order to provide excellent service to our customers. Our employees are responsible for monitoring and maintaining over 300 miles of pipe, 2 water treatment plants, 10,000 taps, and 86 square miles of watershed.

What You'll Do:
- Operate water treatment plant to produce finished water that meets or exceeds State drinking water standards for purity through dual media filtration, pre and post chlorination, fluoridation, and corrosion control.
- Monitor plant processes and functions; read meters, gauges, graphs, and control panels; collect samples of raw and treated water; perform routine laboratory tests to ensure the quality of treated water; modify plant operations to adjust to changing processing needs including the adjustment of pumps, flow valves, and feeder systems.
- Respond to emergency situations associated with the water treatment plant.
- Perform general plant maintenance including cleaning, painting, and repairing plant facilities; perform a full range of grounds maintenance duties involved in maintaining landscaped and un-landscaped grounds.
- Operate, maintain, and repair plant machinery, equipment, and vehicles including pumps, valves, motors, engines, meters, drives, tanks, and compressors.

This position is a safety sensitive position, which means you will be subject to random drug screens due to the nature of the work performed.
What We're Looking For:
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in repair and construction of water distribution or sewer collection systems, and/or water treatment plant operations and maintenance.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized training in water treatment, biology, chemistry, or a related field.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid Colorado Class B Commercial driver’s license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within up to five (5) years of hire, Class A Water Operator certification, depending upon certification level at the time of hire.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within up to five (5) years of hire, Class 4 Water Distribution certification, depending upon certification level at the time of hire.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
