Materials & Processes Intern

Job Title: Materials & Processes Intern -Process          Department: Materials & Process

Reports to: M&P Manager     Job Type: Part- Time      FLSA: Non-exempt 

 

Position Summary: 

Materials & Process Intern will assist the M&P team to develop new processing practices and to evaluate materials performance. M&P Intern will work with M&P team and other groups including Operation and Manufacturing to ensure IRAD project goals and production targets are met. The incumbent will assist the team for metallurgical evaluation, hands-on material characterization and product quality assurance. The individual will assist with troubleshooting processes or machines to establish corrective actions. Basic understanding of MELD machine operation and process, QC, hands on material testing and characterization is expected from this position.  

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help performing material characterization including mechanical testing, metallography and microscopy to understand links between process and material performance.
  • Become proficient operating lab equipment such as EDM, bandsaw, heat-treatment furnaces, mounting machine, auto-polisher, optical microscope, tensile/compression tester, Rockwell hardness tester, electrical conductivity, bend testing, Dye penetrant inspection, Vickers microhardness tester, bend tester, Fume hood, etc.
  • Help maintain lab supplies and inventories and order consumables when necessary.
  • Support M&P with meeting the goals and deliverables and report results to M&P Manager.
  • Communicate with outside vendors and suppliers, especially 3rd party testing laboratories, to obtain information for potential developments, adding capabilities, and sourcing materials and services, as needed.
  • Help the process team to prepare before deposition such as preparing feedstocks, substrate, tool, fixtures, etc.
  • Work with MELD M&P operator to receive proper training and assist with process trials when needed.
  • Learn the basics to operate the MELD machine safely and participate in developing process parameters for upcoming materials.
  • Properly document all the steps for development works and use the established routers for every work order.
  • Analyze data from MELD deposits and link differences to mechanical testing results.
  • Use or modify an existing automated program or script that can import MELD build data and run a “QC Check” based on specified criteria and to generate a 3D view of build parameters.
  • Help assist in troubleshooting process related problems and machine faults as they arise.
  • Assist in 6S (5S+ Safety) adoption at MELD.
  • Assist in preparing SOPs and training documents.

Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of different types of materials, such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites, and their applications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with materials standards and regulations related to specific industries.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data from materials testing and experiments.

Education

Pursuing a degree in Engineering and Science.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, talk, and hear.  The employee occasionally is required to stand, climb, stoop, kneel and crouch.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or push/pull up to 40 pounds.
