Instructional Design Intern

🚀 About the Opportunity

Break Into Tech is looking for a driven, creative college student who wants to learn about instructional design and build something real to help our students break into tech!

  • In this internship, you’ll support the Break Into Tech instructional designer by improving existing resources and creating new materials for students.
  • This 6-week internship pays up to $1000 (details below).

🎓 What is an instructional designer?

An instructional designer creates lessons, materials, assessments, and other resources for educational purposes. We use principles of adult learning theory to ensure that information is clear, impactful, and accessible to all learners. In other words, we get to learn new things and share that knowledge with others!

 

🛠️ What You’ll Learn

  • Pedagogy basics - how people learn, and how to teach them in online settings
  • Instructional design skills, including making lessons and assignments
  • Creating engaging and interactive lessons
  • Ensuring accessibility in remote learning environments
  • How to create practice SQL data sets and write questions for assessments

 

💼 What You’ll Do

You’ll be responsible for

  • attending 10 hours of lessons on instructional design and accessible remote learning.
  • small assignments to indicate mastery of lesson material
  • medium assignments that contribute to Break Into Tech
  • one large final assignment: an activity that you design, build, and implement in the Break Into Tech course!

 

🎯 What We’re Looking For

  • Interest in instructional design, SQL, data science, edtech, accessibility
  • Desire to build real-world projects
  • Curiosity, independence, and eagerness to learn
  • Some experience with basic/intermediate SQL (equivalent of completing Break Into Tech modules 1-3 - e.g., JOINs, subqueries, GROUP BY, HAVING)
    • Willing to work hard and learn something new? You can still apply if you’re not familiar with SQL! If so, we can push back the internship start so that you can complete modules 1 through 3.

 

💵 💲Compensation

You will receive up to $1,000 in compensation, divided between hourly pay and a bonus for completing the final project on schedule:

  • $800: 50 hours of assignments @ $16 / hour
  • $200: Final Project Bonus

You will also receive

  • 10 hours of lessons
  • free access to the Break Into Tech course (Value: $499 - sells at $249)
    • If you are not familiar with SQL, you will need to complete lessons in modules 1 through 3 by the end of week 1 of the internship.

Note: If you are not allowed to receive hourly pay for an internship as a condition of your scholarship or visa, we can alter the pay structure to the following: We buy the IP rights for the final product from you for $1,000 after successful completion of the internship.

Start Date: Flexible (Summer 2025)

Duration: ~6 weeks (~10 hours per week)
