School Counselor
JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Collaborating with site administration and staff, the Student Counselor shall provide direct services to students to enhance student social and emotional well being in order to promote academic success. This service shall consist of counseling referred students and assisting staff in working with these students, as well as, collaborating with community partners to create a comprehensive intervention plan. Two overriding principles form the core of the counseling program: 1) data-driven formative decision making which delivers 2) increasing levels of appropriate intervention and services for students in need.
I. BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide school counseling services to students in Del Norte County and to counsel students requiring assistance with personal problems in the areas of school, social and family adjustment. 1. Work with administrators, teachers, support providers, and community agencies, as needed to identify and provide interventions for academically at-risk students including Special Education students. 2. Will collaborate in the creation and implementation of a comprehensive tiered school counseling program that serves all students. 3. School Counselors will provide all school staff with training in violence prevention curriculum and how to identify students exhibiting signs of distress, depression and anxiety as well as barriers and/or triggers that may exacerbate student crisis. 4. Collaborate with administration, teachers, and other mental health professionals to create and implement a data driven system of referral for academic, attendance, and behavioral needs screening, assessment, and delivery of appropriate preventative intervention. 5. Actively participate in school site-level Data Based Decision Making teams (DBDM) and other professional learning communities as directed by site administration. 6. Conduct initial baseline screenings of all students to identify “at risk” students and monitor individual student progress. 7. Identify and refer to appropriate agencies and resources, individual students requiring therapeutic and/or crisis counseling (i.e. substance abuse, child abuse, suicide, pregnancy, etc.) 8. Sign in and out at each school each day for all itinerant employees including a log that tracks students contact (name of student and time of contact) 9. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records. as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations. 10. Attend IEP’s when possible. If attendance is not possible, provide a brief write up of present levels of performance addressing counseling goals prior to the meeting 11. Work with site administration to prioritize students in need of counseling.
