Peer Mentor Job Description

Department Overview

Project RISE (Resources Increasing Student Excellence) Student Support Services (SSS) is a Federal TRIO Program funded in part by the United States Department of Education that supports students who are firstgeneration, from a designated income background, and/or have documented disability in the Student Access and Accommodations Services (SASS) office. The program seeks to provide students with support in three main areas: Academic Success, Personal and Professional Development, and Advocacy & Support. Project RISE is located in WDC Suite 1223

Compensation: Hourly rate $15/hour (15-20 Hours Weekly)

 

Position Overview:

A Peer Mentor within the Project RISE Program conducts engaging mentoring sessions for program-eligible students and provides support to the department. Peer Mentors develop an enduring, trusting relationship with students and help them increase their academic performance through direct interaction. Peer Mentors utilize strategies focused on goal attainment and personal development which include the tools found in the Peer Mentor Resource Manual.

 

 

 

 

Peer Mentors Required Qualifications:

· Current college student (or, enrolled for the upcoming fall 2025 semester)

· Priority consideration is given to current or eligible members of Project RISE program

· 15 or more hours of coursework completed

· 9 or more hours of enrollment each semester (excluding summer)

· 2.50 semester GPA or better at the time of application and to maintain eligibility

· Continual progress toward graduation

· History of responsible student behavior

· Understanding and demonstration of professional workplace behavior

· Ability to manage time effectively, work progressively and independently towards job goals

· Ability to relate well with students

· Possess a positive, encouraging attitude

· Desire to have high participation in the program (Project RISE staff/peer mentor meetings, workshops, cultural events, and other programming activities)

· Ability to demonstrate understanding and empathy towards the problems the underrepresented student population faces.

· Strong ability to solve problems in an appropriate and professional manner

· Ability to meet job requirements in person

 

Job Responsibilities:

· Serve as advocate, coach, and role model for participants

· Utilize tools from Peer Mentor Resource Manual when engaging with students

· Support programming efforts within the department

· Assist with highlighting upcoming workshops, student successes, and program events

· Assist with tabling and recruitment events for new Project RISE members

· Serve as a resource for participants in Project RISE and HCC

· Initiate individual and group contact with participants each week during the semester

· Submit participant contact/progress reports and paperwork timely and accurately

· Attend weekly Peer Mentor staff meeting

· Attend Project RISE staff meetings when available

· Attend all Peer Mentor training sessions

· Assist in workshop preparation and presentation

· Accompany participants to workshops and cultural events

· Provide feedback to program staff

· Adhere to the Project RISE Peer Mentor Professional Code of Ethics

· Maintain confidentiality

· Other duties as assigned
