Student Life Research Intern Position Description

Position Description:

The Office of the Vice President for Student Life seeks an aspiring social scientist (graduate or undergraduate) who will help us collect meaningful data about the experiences of students at the UW, discover patterns in that data, and help communicate findings to the campus community and beyond.  The ideal candidate is comfortable taking initiative, conducting research, looking to make an immediate positive impact on the experiences of UW students, and enjoys working with a creative team.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data points from all units in Student Life that demonstrates the positive impacts of services and programs
  • Identify trends and support strategic, data-driven decision-making
  • Collaborate with Student Life IT to develop clear and informative visualizations of data through data visualization software (e.g. Power BI) or other packages
  • Meet regularly with the Vice President for Student Life to provides updates on progress and receive feedback/direction
  • Meet regularly with Senior Leaders in the Division of Student Life
  • Participate in Student Life Assessment Committee meetings
  • Assist units in developing and interpreting data

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at UW, Seattle
  • Ability to analyze quantitative data and a good knowledge of statistics
  • Ability to analyze qualitative data and knowledge of qualitative data analysis methods
  • Experience with data analysis planning, demonstrated skill in making sense of data, and familiarity with data analysis tools and software (e.g. MS Excel)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

 

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with data visualization software (e.g., Power BI) 
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software
  • Experience with data wrangling, processing, cleaning, and verification of social science data
  • Experience with text analysis, including content analysis and machine learning techniques

 

Compensation and Work Schedule:

10-15 hours a week at $21 per hour. The Office of the Vice President for Student Life is located in 101 Gerberding Hall. Operating hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. We are flexible during finals week. Schedules are based upon workload, the applicant’s class schedule and other academic responsibilities. Ideal candidates can give at least one academic year commitment. A hybrid schedule of on-site and remote work is an available option. The position is open until filled.
