Benefits & LOA Intern

Job Summary

The Benefits & LOA Intern will support the Human Resources Team by assisting with the administration, documentation, and communication of employee benefits and leave programs. This internship offers hands-on experience with FMLA, CFRA, ADA, and internal LOA processes, as well as exposure to wellness initiatives and open enrollment activities. This is an ideal role for a student or early-career professional interested in HR compliance, employee support, and benefits administration.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in tracking and maintaining employee leave cases and documentation using HRIS and other organizational tools.
  • Support the intake and processing of FMLA, CFRA, ADA, PDL, and company leaves.
  • Help track and document Reasonable Accommodation (RA) requests, including participating in and learning the interactive process and approval workflow.
  • Draft and update communication templates related to benefits and leave requests.
  • Assist in benefits communications to provide ongoing benefits support, prepare for open enrollment, and/or address employee FAQs.
  • Learn the fundamentals of Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance, including auditing benefit eligibility, reviewing measurement periods, and updating coding for year-end reporting.
  • Help organize and maintain digital files in accordance with privacy and compliance standards.
  • Attend and support HR meetings, trainings, and employee onboarding sessions as needed.
  • Participate in process improvement projects or audits related to benefits and LOA tracking.
  • Follow all safety rules and practices to include the wearing of all essential personal protective equipment.
  • Follow all food safety and personal hygiene practices.
  • Perform other HR-related tasks as required and requested in support of the Benefits, Leave of Absence, and Employee Support programs.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Health, or a related field (minimum 60 credit hours for undergraduate students in good academic standing).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in employment law, employee support, or workplace wellness.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements

The working environment is primarily office-based, with occasional visits to production or administrative areas for observation or employee interaction (depending if role is based in Visalia/Tipton or Ventura). The Benefits/LOA Intern will spend approximately 85–90% of the workday at a computer workstation. The remaining time may include walking between departments, attending meetings, or delivering training materials.

This role requires frequent transitions between sitting and standing, with occasional walking. Minimal physical exertion is expected; however, the ability to meet flexible and changing priorities and work under time-sensitive deadlines is essential. Occasional bending, lifting (up to 15 pounds), or reaching may be required when handling files or printed materials.
