Coastal Program Intern
The Coastal Program intern will be joining as TWT continues to develop and implement projects along the coast through programs such as its Texas Water Market Makers, which centers on collaboration with other conservation-minded entities seeking to become environmental water transactors. The Coastal Program intern will work under the supervision of the Coastal Program Manager and assist in collecting, managing, and analyzing remote data to assess the ecological outcome associated with water transaction projects. The Coastal Program intern will be responsible for managing the deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of monitoring equipment and assisting with hydrological and ecological surveys and project implementation tasks.
Responsibilities include:
• travelling and conducting field visits individually or in tandem with the Coastal Program Manager to assess, repair, site, and maintain monitoring equipment in the field, including game cameras and water quality monitoring instruments,
• coordinating with partners such as state agencies, universities and NGOs to manage data captured by TWT and partners,
• collecting, managing, and analyzing data such as still and motion images, water quality and meteorological data, remote sensing data, etc. using prescribed/recommended software tools designed for such management and analysis,
• undertaking special research projects on an as-needed basis.
Qualifications
Requirements include:
• Currently enrolled or recently graduated from an undergraduate or master’s program in hydrology, biology, ecology, or a related field
• Ability to travel to outdoor field sites on the mid to upper Texas coast with occasional overnights to maintain and manage equipment deployed under challenging conditions (heat, cold, rain, remote areas such as mudflats, wildlife areas, etc. Car rental and/or mileage reimbursements will be provided
• Familiarity with operating non-motorized watercraft, e.g. kayaks and other small watercraft.
• Ability to gather and synthesize large quantities of information into databases/organized formats under guidance from project lead
• Ability to assemble, organize, analyze, and ensure quality control and backup of large databases
• Familiarity with or capacity to learn new and untested analysis tools and software meant for image processing and wildlife recognition
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of internal and external partners and stakeholders
• Strong core computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, & PowerPoint
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Drone operation experience and license preferred but not required
