Are you someone who loves solving problems, spotting patterns, and thinking about how technology can be used for good? RootedChange, a Denver based nonprofit reimagining education through youth voice, community rooted curriculum, and equity focused real world learning, is seeking a curious and driven student to join our launch team as an AI + Data Fellow.
This is not a typical internship. It’s a leadership fellowship for someone who wants to explore how AI, data, and smart systems can support real change in schools and communities. You will help us shape and test tools that support teachers, lift student voice, and make learning more human—not less.
Key Responsibilities
As the AI + Data Fellow, you will:
Develop and test ideas for how our platform can use AI to help teachers plan curriculum, assess student work, or provide real time support
Explore and prototype lightweight tools, plug into existing APIs, or research features we might build
Help organize and clean data we gather from schools, families, and communities so we can learn from it and use it in service of the people we work with
Support our storytelling and fundraising efforts by helping create clean, clear visuals that explain our impact to others
Stay on top of trends in ethical AI, education tech, and accessibility, and bring that learning into our planning
Collaborate with other fellows to design solutions that blend tech, community, and creativity. You will be working alongside a passionate team of students, educators, and creatives who are all helping bring this vision to life
Who You Are (Ideal Traits & Skills)
We’re looking for a student who is passionate about technology and impact. You might be a great fit if you are:
Studying computer science, data science, cognitive science, HCI, or a related field
Excited by the potential of AI and automation but care deeply about people and justice
Curious about how schools work and how they can be reimagined
Comfortable with research, testing tools, and giving feedback
Able to write clearly and explain technical ideas in everyday language
Willing to try new things, ask questions, and work independently when needed
Interested in equity, access, and making tech useful for people who are often left out of the design process

This fellowship is designed to help you grow as a changemaker and innovator while making a real impact. You will:
Contribute to early stage development of tools that may scale across schools
Help define what ethical, student centered use of AI can look like in education
Gain experience that bridges tech, education, and social good
Build a portfolio of ideas, prototypes, or analysis that you can share with future employers or schools
Receive mentorship and support from RootedChange team members and collaborators
Earn academic credit or a stipend for your time, depending on your situation and our funding availability
Location & Commitment
Location: Denver based fellowship. You should be located in the Denver, CO area for periodic in person meetings and collaboration. Much of the work can be done remotely
Time Commitment: Flexible depending on your school schedule. Expect to commit approximately 10 hours per week on average. We can adjust if you need a different arrangement for school credit
Start Date: Fellows may begin during summer 2025 or at the start of the fall semester. Let us know your availability when applying
Duration: Ideally a school semester or full academic year, with possibility to extend or adjust as needed. We will work with you to set a timeline that aligns with your academic calendar and our project needs
Compensation: This is a fellowship position. Depending on your needs, we can offer academic credit or volunteer or service hours. Our goal is to ensure this is a meaningful and rewarding experience for you, with recognition for your work
