Product Engineering Co-Op

GENERAL SUMMARY

 

Responsible for development of new products, redesigns and/or maintenance of existing products and general laboratory testing for proof of concept and evaluation testing as assigned. Includes new product design, rationalization of existing product lines, redesign for cost reductions or product standardization and product line expansions.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

 

  • Perform engineering calculations required to accurately determine product size, capacity and performance to meet required design parameters.
  • Utilize CAD software to analyze existing models and record weights, materials, and other essential elements.
  • Analyze research data and Product Specifications to determine feasibility of product proposal.
  • Confer with research personnel to clarify or resolve problems and develop design.
  • Prepare or direct preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics and design for manufacturability.
  • Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Ensure engineering standards for existing products are maintained, which includes completing the Engineering Change Request (ECR) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) process, which also includes existing product maintenance projects.
  • Perform Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) activities as related to addressing existing product designs.  Identify opportunities to take cost out of existing designs and implement through the ECR and Product Maintenance process. 

 

SKILLS

  • Must have ability/experience in reading, analyzing and interpreting common scientific and technical journals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and laboratory test programs.
  • Efficient in reading, comprehending, and writing technical reports and correspondence.     
  • Ability to read and comprehend basic legal and financial language. 
  • Must have ability/experience in reading and creating manufacturing drawings including GD&T.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. 
  • Must have prior experience in calculating and manipulating figures and amounts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, areas, circumference and volumes as well as using and converting units of measurement. 
  • Must have strong abilities to apply concepts of calculus, algebra and geometry. 
  • Efficient in data analysis and correlation using MS Excel and/or Matlab. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 
  • Experience performing FEA using ANSYS is strongly desired.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle or feel, talk, see and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 25 pounds. Use of the appropriate PPE is required.

This job operates in a manufacturing professional office environment. The employee can be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration and loud noise level while on the production floor.
