Resource Management Intern
This position will assist the Environmental Compliance Specialist in monitoring and maintaining compliance with environmental permits and regulations for the Composting Facility at the Napa Materials Diversion Facility (MDF) and other facilities associated with Napa Recycling & Waste Services (NRWS) as needed. The primary objective of this role is to monitor and maintain Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the composting operations and assist with environmental compliance. The qualified individual will be expected to assist with onsite monitoring of parameters required by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District (YSAQMD), and other agencies. This position may also assist with stormwater monitoring of the site and coordination with the Napa County Local Enforcement Agency (LEA). The intern will also support the company’s Outreach team in waste audits, customer education, and social media projects. This position will provide support to the Resource Manager and Compost Air Quality Specialist and may be given special projects as needed to diversify the job requirements. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitoring and maintaining BMPs for the composting operations with use of onsite tools and equipment
- Recordkeeping and maintenance of BAAQMD/YSAQMD approved logs
- Coordinate and perform monitoring and testing requirements for the covered aerated static pile (CASP) composting facility and based on BAAQMD/YSAQMD permit regulations
- Assist in managing the onsite lab for the CASP compost facility
- Assist research trials with onsite team and external entities such as universities, customers, non-profits, and other composting facilities to perform research on compostable food ware (for example)
- Maneuvering in and around composting operations and equipment in a safe manner and following all safety principles and precautions applicable to onsite operations
- Assisting with Senate Bill 1383 sampling requirements for organics
- Assist the Outreach team with Residential & Commercial waste audits & customer trainings
- Create educational materials and social media content to promote diversion

Qualifications
- In pursuit of bachelor’s degree or with beginner’s experience in environmental sector
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn quickly
- Project a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, positive behavior
- Passionate about the waste industry and interested in learning about large scale organic waste management
- MS Office software and other software normally used in environmental consulting or ability and desire to learn
Knowledge
- General knowledge of environmental science and environmental regulations with an understanding (or desire to learn) about the waste industry and organics management
- Understand and comply with all NRWS safety procedures, policies, rules and practices relevant to performing this role
Skills
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Comfortable in a dynamic work environment and ability to adapt to new responsibilities
- Bilingual skills helpful but not required
Physical Requirements
- Climb up and down compost piles frequently and travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at the facility
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements
- Work at heights greater than ten feet
- Ability to lift 50 + pounds

Position is located at a recycling/transfer station that processes recyclable materials including wood and yard waste, which generates outside noise and air borne particles.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Occasional travel may be required (in particular to NRWS-affiliated site in Yolo County).
- Valid driver's license with a driving record in good standing required.
