Internship Position Description

Title:                          Archives Intern (Summer 2025)               

Division:                     Collections, Exhibitions & Research

Reports to:                  Manager of Library Cataloging                                        

Position Status:          Part-time; Non-Exempt

Hourly rate:               $12.41/hour

 

Position/Project summary: 

This project requires an intern with experience in archival processing and the writing of finding aids. The intern will work with a collection of 20th-century business records related to aluminum to create a comprehensive finding aid for a series of these records. Once completed, the series finding aid will be featured on our website 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Review the previously created finding aid and look for inconsistencies.
  • Rewrite the finding aid, adding information and research as needed.
  • Work to ensure collection folders are labeled correctly and match the finding aid inventory.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Knowledge of 20th-century Virginia history and interest in economic history. 
  • Legible handwriting. 
  • Attention to detail and an interest in archival theory and practice.  
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.  
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.  

 

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School education, pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in humanities, museum, libraries, or a related field.   

 

The ideal candidate will: 

  • Prior experience working with and handling special collections materials is preferred.   

 

Note & Special Requirements: 

  • Intern will need to work Monday to Friday between the hours of 9 am – 5 pm.
