Communications Internship

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) seeks a rising star looking to launch a successful career in mass communications.

As millions of people use Wisconsin’s state highways every day, this is an opportunity to serve a wide audience and make a positive impact by broadening public understanding on the safety topics core to the WisDOT mission.

The communications internship is ideal for any actively enrolled college student who sees a future in providing organizational support and leadership, especially in public outreach roles. More specifically, this position will be critical to the delivery of two major digital projects that support public understanding of the highway improvement program, and a revitalized employee intranet rich with training and engagement resources. While digital content management skills are a plus, we can provide on-the-job training to the right candidate. This position may also have opportunities for statewide travel to collect content to support our initiatives – so photography skills are also a plus.

The position will be headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, working within the Office of Workforce, Innovation and Budget (OWIB) of the WisDOT Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD). Candidates should expect to make frequent day trips to work zones in this role.

This communications internship will start Monday, June 30th. This position is available for 1 year or 1,039 hours, part time during the school year and up to 40 hours per week in the summer.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience or relevant coursework in creating, editing, and publishing digital material.
  • A basic understanding of shooting photos and video clips (with mobile phone or higher-grade equipment).
  • Strong office management, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Well-qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience with content management systems and any of the following: ArcGIS, SharePoint, HTML, CSS.
  • The ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms.
  • Experience doing communications, outreach, or website work on behalf of an organization.
