College Intern Position
Job description:
- Support the Product Development group in the design, development, and transfer of custom medical device products. Job duties include supporting the Engineering team with development builds, aid in set-up, operate and breakdown of braiding, weaving and knitting equipment. They will aid in data collection and statistical analysis, coordinating test method studies, conducting feasibility trials on new processes, and compiling documents for manufacturing transfer. Will work both independently and also collaboratively with manufacturing personnel and other engineers.

Hours:
- Summer: ~8:30-5:00, 5 days per week
Equipment:
The intern will be ideally working with automated facility equipment (both in CME environment and QA lab) for R&D studies.
The following machines are either non-automated, or equipped with excessive guarding, or no contact with dangerous surfaces.
- Automated Tabletop tipping Unit - Heated dies are fully guarded, no cutting mechanism
- Optical Inspection systems / Comparators for visual inspection
The following machines are equipped with an interlock system, and will only run when door is closed. All programming is performed on a PLC screen on the outside of the machine.
- Braider
- Automated tipper/cutter
- Post-processing machines such as Hot stretching and Coating machines
Other potential machines/areas with existing safety procedures:
- Fume hood- Current Procedures include proper PPE (safety glasses) when working with chemicals.
- Oven - Heat-resistant gloves used to load and unload product.
- Ultrasonic Welder - The activation requires two hands / two buttons (to eliminate potential for hand to contact the welding surface).
- Tensile tester- Includes pneumatic grips. Foot pedal to activate.
All other machinery, particularly equipment with sharp parts or requiring more skill to set up, will be limited to observation by the intern. Includes:
- Knitting machines and weaving looms
- Non-woven equipment (needler)
