Summary:

The City of Kenmore is looking for two (2) interns interested in gaining experience, to share our best practices with, and perform field work during this Summer of 2025. Major duties will include the mapping and inspection of the city’s stormwater system and other public works facilities. This internship begins June 23rd and ends September 12th, 2025 and will predominantly be outdoors. Because of the small number of City employees, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties as may be required from time to time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Open, lift and pull manhole lids repeatedly during the course of the workday for catch basin and manhole inspections
  • Visually inspect catch basins, manholes, pipes and ditches for sediment loads, water quality issues and structural defects
  • Communicate stormwater issues effectively with Kenmore residents/customers
  • Other surface water management tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of maps and directions
  • Skills in safe and effective driving practices
  • Basic knowledge and usage of computers / electronic tablets for data entry
  • Ability to operate iOS-based devices for data collections
  •  Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse communities, age groups and
    abilities
  • Ability to use basic inspection tool

Education and Experience

The position typically requires current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program with a major in science, engineering, planning or similar field. Must be 18 years of age by the start date of June 23rd, 2025. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Licenses and Certificates:

 A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required in order to drive to various locations to perform work at multiple sites throughout the City of Kenmore or King County, and to drive a City vehicle. If selected for this position, a good driving record with a three (3) year driving record abstract would be required.

Additional Information:

  • Work Environment – Duties are performed primarily in outdoor work environments, which will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions. Work may be conducted near vehicular traffic. Frequent lifting, pulling, walking (in potentially steep or rough terrain), wading (in shallow stream or shoreline areas), carrying (tools and field computer), kneeling and crouching may be required.
  • Event Participation Requirement - As part of this internship, candidates will be required to participate in two City events on the following dates: July 10th, 24th; August 7th, 17th, 21st.
  • Interns will have the opportunity to select the events that best fit their schedule, based on availability. City events are typically held on evenings or weekends.
  • Hours of Work – Must have the availability to work up to 40 hours per week (flexibility may be allowed for studies and testing.) Work hours are typically 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. The position will have requirements for occasional after-hours assignments to assist in outreach events.
  • Safety Requirements – Required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
