Education Coordinator

The Custom House Maritime Museum seeks a dynamic and empathetic education coordinator who has great vision and initiative to lead and expand K-16 programs. With a new STEM-focused Discovery Center open, this position will be an exciting career opportunity for the right person. The Boys and Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley visit twice a week. The coordinator will outreach to schools and expand our suite of programs. The coordinator will take a lead role in a new internship program (grades 8-college) and be a strong assist in managing a 120 person strong Volunteer program. Saturday summer hours are expected. This 14 hour position can increase to 20 hours if Sunday hours are adopted. Please be advised that the Custom House is a historic building and is not accessible for those with limited mobility.

Preferred Skill Sets:

  • A strong background in history, education, museum studies, or marine science essential;
  • Experience working with school-age kids, especially grades 3-6, strongly desirable;
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan and execute crafts and activities for school-aged kids
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google suites
  • Comfortable speaking to groups
  • Experience handling tools a plus;
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; comfortable working outdoors

Duties

  • Required to work on Saturday for 4 hours and option to increase hours to take on the Sunday shift;
  • Plan and lead educational programs for Boys and Girls Club and other school trips;
  • Network with local schools on field trips, in-school programs,
  • Ability to write lesson plans in accordance with state guidelines;
  • Grow a nascent Internship program with students Grade 8-college;
  • Assist in the fitting out of the new Discovery Center;
  • Develop interactive elements and educational materials for visitors (i.e. treasure hunts, guides for a kid-oriented tour, STEM-based interactives, etc.)
  • Work closely with the Volunteer Corps to develop camaraderie and a strong sense of purpose.
