Air Pollution Specialist

California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Aftermarket Diesel and Off-Road Section (ADORS) within the Emissions Certification and Compliance Division is looking for an enthusiastic, creative, highly motivated, and organized Air Pollution Specialist (APS) to support the aftermarket programs. ADORS is at the forefront of assessing innovative aftermarket products, including EV conversions, alternative fuel conversion, hybrid conversions, large spark ignition retrofits, diesel retrofits, and other aftermarket technologies (e.g., off-road aftermarket parts, performance part, telematics devices, etc.) as far as their compliance with the various regulations and procedures that ADORS is responsible for implementing and supporting. Under supervision of the section manager, staff in the section evaluate designs and test data of aftermarket parts and retrofit systems. They will perform engineering evaluations to determine the effect of performance parts on emissions, analyze vehicle/engine emission data, prepare reports and other technical documentation for approval, develop pertinent engineering test procedures for emission compliance testing and prepare necessary correspondences and guidelines to applicants. Evaluation of parts may also involve review of manufacturer durability test plans, on-board diagnostics II (OBD II) compliance, and impact on vehicle auxiliary emission control devices. Staff in this section also support the Verification database, conduct warranty report reviews, support the warranty database, support potential recall activities, and may conduct audits relating to aftermarket diesel particulate filters. Staff in the section may be assigned to assist in the development of new regulations pertaining to emerging aftermarket areas. Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

Beginning July 1st, 2025, per Executive Order N-22-25, CARB employees will be required to report into office four days a week.

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
