Social Media and Public Health Promotion Intern

Gloucester Health Department

Social Media and Public Health Promotion for Gloucester Youth Group

Background

This project focuses on enhancing the Gloucester Youth Group’s social media presence and leveraging these platforms to promote positive public health messages. By utilizing social media as a tool, we can effectively engage the community, raise awareness about critical health issues, and empower young leaders to advocate for healthy behaviors. Currently, the Gloucester Youth Group lacks dedicated resources and expertise to maximize the potential of its social media channels. This gap has limited our ability to reach our target audience with timely and impactful health-related messages. A summer intern will play a pivotal role in addressing these gaps by designing a strategic approach to content creation, audience engagement, and health promotion. This project aligns with broader public health goals by fostering community awareness and encouraging preventive behaviors.

Methods

The intern will undertake the following key tasks over the course of the summer program:

1. Social Media Strategy Development: Create a comprehensive plan to improve the group’s presence on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. This will include identifying target audiences, scheduling content, and setting measurable goals.

2. Content Creation and Scheduling: Develop engaging and informative posts, stories, and videos that highlight public health themes such as mental health, substance use prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices.

3. Community Engagement: Collaborate with youth group members to source ideas and feedback, ensuring content resonates with their peers. The intern will also monitor and respond to comments and messages to foster meaningful interactions.

4. Promotion of Public Health Initiatives: Partner with local health departments and organizations to share resources, upcoming events, and success stories related to public health.

5. Evaluation and Reporting: Track the performance of social media campaigns using analytics tools. The intern will compile a report at the end of the program, summarizing key metrics, successes, and recommendations for sustained efforts.

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Experience managing social media sites
  2. Academic training on communication strategy
  3. Comfortable working across social media platforms

Expected Outcomes

By the conclusion of the summer program (160 hours), the following outcomes are anticipated:

1. Increased Social Media Engagement: A measurable improvement in follower count, post reach, and interaction rates across all platforms.

2. Enhanced Content Library: A repository of high-quality, reusable content (e.g., graphics, videos, and captions) aligned with public health themes.

3. Strengthened Community Connections: Expanded partnerships with local organizations and an active online community supporting public health efforts.

4. Strategic Recommendations: A detailed plan for maintaining and expanding the social media strategy beyond the internship period, ensuring sustainability.

5. Youth Empowerment: Increased involvement and leadership among youth group members in content creation and health advocacy.

This internship will not only provide valuable experience to the intern but also create lasting benefits for the Gloucester Youth Group and the broader community. By enhancing our capacity to communicate and advocate, this project will contribute to building a healthier, more informed Gloucester.
